United Airlines and JetBlue Form “Blue Sky” Partnership to Share Loyalty Perks and Ticket Sales

United Airlines and JetBlue Form “Blue Sky” Partnership to Share Loyalty Perks and Ticket Sales

United Airlines and JetBlue Airways announced on Thursday a new partnership called “Blue Sky” that will give frequent flyers expanded benefits and easier booking options across both airlines’ networks.

Pending regulatory approval, the deal will allow United’s MileagePlus and JetBlue’s TrueBlue loyalty members to earn and redeem miles on most flights operated by the other airline. Frequent flyer perks such as priority boarding, free checked baggage, and preferred seating will also extend to passengers flying on the other carrier’s aircraft.

Both airlines plan to integrate their booking systems to display each other’s flight itineraries and fares on their websites and apps, making it more convenient for travelers to plan and book their trips. Details about the full scope of the partnership are expected to be announced later this year.

In a significant operational move, JetBlue will grant United access to seven daily round trips at John F. Kennedy Airport starting in 2027, marking United’s return to JFK after ceasing operations there in 2022 to focus on Newark Liberty International Airport. JetBlue, known for its strong presence on the East Coast, currently operates about 180 round trips a day at JFK.

“United’s global reach perfectly complements JetBlue’s East Coast leisure network, and significantly expands the options and benefits for TrueBlue members, no matter where in the world they are traveling,” said Joanna Geraghty, CEO of JetBlue.

Scott Kirby, United Airlines CEO, echoed the sentiment: “We’re always looking for ways to give our MileagePlus members even more value and benefits, and this collaboration gives them new, unique ways to use their hard-earned miles and find options that fit their schedule.”

Despite the partnership, both airlines will continue to operate as separate companies and will independently manage and price their flights. The agreement follows the termination of JetBlue’s previous alliance with American Airlines in 2023 after a successful antitrust lawsuit.

The Biden administration has taken a tougher stance on airline consolidations, blocking JetBlue’s attempted merger with Spirit Airlines. In contrast, the Trump administration has expressed openness to business consolidations, including banking mergers, under new proposed rules.
