Vacation Rental Scams on the Rise: How to Avoid Booking Fraud on Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway
With vacation season heating up, travelers eager to book their next getaway are being warned about a growing wave of vacation rental scams. Popular platforms like Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO are being exploited by cybercriminals who post fake listings designed to trick users into handing over their money.
The scams typically involve fraudsters creating convincing, but entirely fake, rental listings. These posts often use stolen photos and property descriptions lifted from legitimate listings to make them look authentic. When a traveler inquires about one of these fake listings, the scammer requests a security deposit or a portion of the rental fee upfront. Once they receive the payment, they may cancel the reservation last minute or leave the traveler stranded with no rental available—or worse, discover the property doesn't even exist.
To help travelers stay safe and avoid falling victim to these scams, experts offer several key tips:
Book through official platforms: Only use reputable websites like Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO, which offer fraud protection and secure payment systems.
Verify property details: Search for the property on Google Maps or ask a trusted local contact to confirm the listing's legitimacy. Be wary of addresses that don’t match or seem suspicious.
Research thoroughly: Look up the property owner's name, address, and contact information. If the same property appears in multiple listings with different contact details, it may be a scam.
Read reviews: A property with numerous negative reviews—or none at all—should raise red flags. Stick to rentals with strong, verified reviews.
Use secure payment methods: Never send money through checks, wire transfers, or services like MoneyGram or Western Union. Always pay through the official platform to ensure your money is protected.
