Elon Musk Steps Back from Trump’s Government Efficiency Role

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, is stepping back from his special role in the Trump administration aimed at identifying and cutting government waste. Musk’s departure from the Department of Government Efficiencies (Doge) comes after he played a prominent role in helping the administration target waste, fraud, and abuse across federal agencies.

During a press event at the White House, President Trump praised Musk’s contributions, saying, “We’ll remember you as we announce billions of dollars of extra waste, fraud and abuse,” with Musk standing nearby. Trump credited the Doge team with achieving $175 billion in estimated savings, though critics have questioned the accuracy of this figure.

Under Musk’s leadership, at least 121,000 federal worker jobs were cut or earmarked for cuts during Trump’s first 100 days in office. Several federal grants and programs were slashed, though some were reinstated following legal challenges. Musk’s efforts, while controversial, have left a lasting impact on the structure of multiple federal agencies.

Despite stepping back from his official role, Musk stated, “I think the Doge team is doing an incredible job. They’re going to continue doing an incredible job. And I’ll continue to be visiting here and be a friend and advisor to the president.”

Musk has also grown more critical of the Trump administration in recent weeks. In a CBS News interview, he expressed agreement with many of the administration’s initiatives but voiced concerns over Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill,” suggesting that the legislation might hinder Doge’s cost-cutting goals.

As Musk refocuses on his private ventures, including SpaceX and Tesla, Doge’s government-wide cost-cutting initiatives are expected to continue with a dedicated team of staffers.
