High Heat Peaks Today, Wind Gusts and Humidity to Increase

Happy Friday, everyone! Today marks the peak of our current heat wave, but a shift is coming as we move into the weekend. Temperatures are soaring across the region with Palm Springs hitting 102°F, Indio reaching 98°F, Cabazon at 94°F, and Joshua Tree a bit cooler at 88°F. Even into the evening, it’s warm, with temperatures staying just below 100°F by midnight and overnight lows in the upper 60s to low 70s for the valley floor.

Wind gusts are already noticeable, with Palm Springs International Airport recording 17 mph, Whitewater at 15 mph, and Yucca Valley, near the location of the ongoing fire, at 13 mph. These winds are expected to pick up over the weekend, particularly on Monday when gusts near Whitewater could approach 25 mph (almost 40 km/h).

A low-pressure system is moving in, which will bring slightly cooler temperatures, but also an increase in humidity. The combination will make for warm and sticky conditions as we approach the weekend. For those looking for relief, coastal areas might provide some respite, but be cautious. Waves are expected to rise up to seven feet, creating hazardous conditions for less experienced swimmers and surfers.

Looking ahead, the Comfort Air Three-Day Forecast shows a gradual dip in temperatures starting Saturday. There’s also a chance of light rain for parts of Southern California, offering a brief break from the dry heat.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and if you’re heading outdoors or to the beach, keep an eye on those surf conditions. For detailed local forecasts and more updates, visit nbcpalmsprings.com or follow NBC Palm Springs on social media.
