Oak View Group Poised to Take Over Palm Springs Convention Center Management

A major shift may be on the horizon for the Palm Springs Convention Center, as the Oak View Group (OVG) emerges as the leading contender to take over management of the facility. The current contract is set to expire in September, and the City of Palm Springs is considering OVG to lead the center’s next chapter.

During a City Council meeting Wednesday night, representatives from OVG presented their vision for the venue's future. The group, which already has a significant presence in the Coachella Valley through operations of the Plaza Theater and ownership of Acrisure Arena, emphasized their commitment to enhancing the center's impact on the local economy.

“We like to say we are Palm Springs,” said an OVG representative, noting that the company already employs more than 850 residents, both full-time and part-time, in the region.

Back in March, two companies submitted proposals to manage the convention center. City staff and hospitality industry leaders leaned in favor of OVG, praising their detailed plan and proven track record. OVG’s proposal includes retaining key elements of the current contract while introducing new goals, such as increasing facility occupancy and prioritizing events that deliver strong economic returns for the city.

“We want measurable and verifiable incentive fee targets,” said Greg O'Dell, OVG’s president of venue management. “We’re talking about fiscal performance, future bookings, and turning what was a deficit into a surplus.”

Financial performance was a central topic at the meeting. While the center reportedly operated at a deficit of about $750,000, OVG claims they can significantly improve its bottom line, referencing other venues under their management that have seen doubled or tripled revenue.

Council members voiced a desire to preserve the city’s unique character through the transition. O'Dell responded with optimism: “We have extreme confidence that we can target key market segments, boost occupancy, improve event outcomes, and enhance revenue—all while staying true to what makes Palm Springs special.”

This potential management change comes ahead of an anticipated $100 million renovation of the convention center, with formal plans expected to be presented to the council in July.

As discussions continue, Palm Springs residents and businesses await the City Council’s final decision—one that could reshape the future of one of the region’s most prominent venues.
