Struggling to Focus at Work? Here’s How to Stay on Task in the Digital Age
If you find it hard to stay focused at work, you’re not alone. In today’s digital age, countless distractions make it tough to get things done. But there are strategies that can help you stay on task and make the most of your day.
In today’s Health Minute, Mandy Gaither reports that attention spans have shrunk significantly over the past couple of decades. Dr. Sanjay Gupta explains that back in 2004, workers could focus on a computer screen for about two and a half minutes. A few years later, that number dropped to just 75 seconds. Today, the average worker can focus for only about 47 seconds before getting distracted.
Gupta also highlights that it takes roughly 25 minutes to refocus after a distraction. Considering that the average American spends at least 10 hours a day in front of a screen, the potential for lost productivity is staggering.
To boost focus and productivity, experts suggest:
Starting with repetitive tasks: Tackle these early in the day when alertness is lower.
Saving high-focus work for peak times: Do the most mentally demanding tasks when you’re naturally more alert.
Creating a to-do list at day’s end: Write down any remaining tasks and put the list aside to clear your mind for tomorrow.
These simple changes can help you regain focus and improve productivity, even in a world full of digital distractions.
