Trump Threatens California Funding Over Trans Student’s Sports Participation
A transgender high school student in California has become the focus of national debate after President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from the state over her participation in girls’ sports. The student, A.B. Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High School, qualified for the state track and field championships, sparking both support and backlash.
In a recent social media post, Trump referenced his February executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” and warned California to comply or risk losing federal support. This threat has ignited controversy around fairness in athletics and the inclusion of transgender athletes in girls’ competitions.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) responded to the controversy by introducing a temporary rule change, allowing additional cisgender female athletes to compete in the state championship meet. CIF clarified that the decision is specific to this event and does not represent a broader policy shift.
Despite the backlash, Hernandez expressed determination. “I’ve trained so hard,” she said. “I’m still a child. You’re an adult, and for you to act like a child shows how you are as a person.”
Her mother, Nereyda Hernandez, defended her daughter’s right to compete, highlighting the courage it takes to participate amid ongoing harassment and threats. “It takes immense bravery to show up, compete, and be visible,” she stated.
Local coaches and community members remain divided. Some argue for fairness and policy changes, while others, including many of A.B.’s teammates, have voiced support for her continued participation.
California state law and CIF policies permit transgender students to compete according to their gender identity, aligning with federal Title IX protections against discrimination.
The U.S. Department of Justice has begun investigating whether the state’s policies violate federal law, adding a legal dimension to the ongoing cultural and political debate.
