Kittens, Seniors, and Summer Camp: Palm Springs Animal Shelter Highlights Adoptions and Programs

It’s kitten season in the Coachella Valley, and the Palm Springs Animal Shelter is bursting with furry cuteness—including this week’s featured pets, Post Malone and Maria, two of the 50 kittens brought in just last week alone.

Dan Rossi from the shelter says it’s the most kittens they’ve received in a single week so far this year. “Seven of them were neonates,” he said, referring to kittens so young they still need bottle feeding. “Thank God we have the fosters that we have.”

Post Malone and Maria are not just adorable—they’re survivors. This brother-sister duo was part of the first group brought in with panleukopenia, a highly contagious and often fatal virus in kittens. Thanks to early intervention from the shelter’s medical team, they’ve made a full recovery and are now thriving.

Fostering plays a key role in the shelter’s ability to save animals. “It’s temporary, and we make it easy,” said Rossi. “We provide everything you need—food, supplies, medical care—and we’re just a phone call away.”

The shelter is also gearing up for its summer camp, a favorite among local families. The camp offers hands-on education about domestic and wild animals for kids entering 4th to 6th grade. There are three sessions in June and July, and financial aid is available for families who qualify.

Along with the kittens, the shelter is hoping to find loving homes for some of its senior residents, including Greta, an 11-year-old house-trained dog who prefers to be the only pet, and Tia, a 12-year-old sweetheart who recently recovered from surgery and is now healthy and ready for adoption.

“These older animals just want peace, love, and a place to rest their head,” Rossi said. “They deserve that.”
