Eureka Fire in Joshua Tree is at 70% Containment

We begin tonight with the latest on the Eureka Fire, which continues to burn in Joshua Tree National Park. According to park officials, the fire has reached 70% containment, with crews making steady progress to keep the flames within containment lines.

Joshua Tree National Park is no stranger to wildfires, particularly as wildfire season approaches. The affected area, Covington Flats—including lower and upper sections—plays a crucial role in preserving Joshua tree habitats. While not the most frequented hiking trail, the area’s ecological importance is significant for the park’s future, especially in light of climate change.

Joshua Tree Visitor Center officials report that with the fire relatively contained, several crews have been released, leaving about 20-30 firefighters still working to fully suppress the blaze. Their efforts focus on securing the containment lines and preventing the fire from spreading further.

Local businesses are already feeling the impact of the fire, particularly as trail closures and seasonal heat keep tourists away. “We do have some local business, but the majority of people coming here are tourists,” one local business owner shared.

Cal Fire reminds residents and visitors that wildfire season is fast approaching. They offer personalized wildfire action plans, tips to harden homes, and evacuation checklists through their online Fire Planner tool. In preparation for the season, Joshua Tree National Park is also prepared to enforce fire bans and close sections of the park, such as Covington Flats, during peak risk periods like the Fourth of July.

The cause of the Eureka Fire has not yet been publicly released, but updates will be provided as information becomes available.
