Delivery Driver Helps Man in Wheelchair Cross One of Omaha’s Busiest Intersections
At one of Omaha’s busiest intersections—90th and Dodge—a simple act of kindness has captured hearts around the community.
Javon Hall was delivering packages Thursday when he spotted a man in a wheelchair struggling to cross the busy road. Without hesitation, Hall paused his delivery route and offered to help.
“I was finishing up a delivery with Walgreens and I kind of walked out and he was just right over here and then he just asked for help. It was just kind of like a natural thing. I just said yeah,” Hall said.
Navigating the sloped intersection is no small feat, especially for someone in a manual wheelchair. Hall says he knew immediately he needed to step in.
“Especially with this intersection, and it's kind of like an incline, so it would have been a lot for him to get through, but I was glad I was there to help him,” he added.
Hall credits his mother for instilling in him a strong sense of empathy and doing the right thing.
“She’s always been like a role model to me… so I mean it's kind of just raised me right.”
After pushing the man—later identified as Tuan—to the local library, the two parted ways. But during an interview days later, Hall recognized a familiar blue coat at a nearby bus stop. It was Tuan again.
This time, Tuan had a chance to thank Hall directly, calling him a “rescue.”
Born with a physical disability, Tuan relies on a wheelchair to get around. He once had an electric wheelchair, but it broke, and his current manual chair now has a front wheel that locks up unexpectedly.
“It's impossible to go up this hill,” he said. “And of course crossing the pedestrian [path].”
Without help, Tuan says crossing the busy intersection is a dangerous ordeal. Thanks to a second chance encounter, Hall was there once again on Monday to help Tuan across safely.
