Flash Flooding Hits 29 Palms as Thunderstorms Soak High Desert
Severe thunderstorms are slamming 29 Palms this evening, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding, and road closures across the High Desert.
NBC Palm Springs meteorologist Chloe Carlson reports that conditions changed rapidly overnight. “I was just in the high desert yesterday, and it’s a completely different story today,” she said.
A band of moisture moved into the area earlier today, sparking thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall rates up to three-quarters of an inch per hour. That intensity has already led to flash flooding.
Viewer Sarah from 29 Palms shared video showing heavy rainfall in her backyard. Meanwhile, Adobe Road, a main route in and out of the city, has been inundated with water and is currently closed. Other impacted roads include Indian Trail, which runs parallel to Highway 62.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the area, in effect until 7:15 p.m. tonight. Residents in 29 Palms and surrounding communities are being urged to stay home and avoid driving through flooded roads.
