President Trump’s Tariff Hike Sparks Renewed U.S.-China Tensions, Budget Battle Looms
President Trump is doubling down on his controversial economic strategy, pushing ahead with increased tariffs and a sweeping federal budget proposal, both of which are sparking significant backlash at home and abroad.
Tensions between the United States and China are again front and center as both nations accuse each other of violating previous trade agreements. Talks that had temporarily paused tariff hikes now appear to be unraveling.
“I can confirm that the two leaders will likely talk this week,” an administration official said, indicating a potential conversation between President Trump and China’s leader in an effort to revive stalled negotiations.
In the meantime, U.S. tariffs on imported steel and aluminum are set to double to 50% starting tomorrow. President Trump says the move will “further secure the steel industry in the United States,” but international allies are preparing to retaliate. The European Union has already announced it’s planning countermeasures.
Back in the U.S., small business owners are watching warily. “American businesses are paying these tariffs,” one business owner said. “We have nine people, and if we don’t get some relief soon, we’re going to have three.”
At the same time, the Senate is preparing to debate President Trump’s massive budget bill, which has already passed the House. The proposal extends major tax cuts while boosting defense and immigration spending. However, several Republican senators have raised alarms over its projected impact on the national deficit and what they see as insufficient spending cuts.
“I would be very surprised if the bill, at least, is not modified in a good direction,” one senator said.
Outside Capitol Hill, protesters are voicing opposition to the bill’s proposed cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs.
As the Fourth of July deadline approaches, both the trade war and the federal budget fight are shaping up to be major tests for the Trump administration.
