Sunny Takes Flight! Big Bear’s Famous Eaglet Leaves Sister in the Dust
WE HAVE SOME NEWS ABOUT OUR FAVORITE EAGLES!
Big Bear Lake is buzzing with excitement as Sunny, one of the now-famous eaglets from the region's popular eagle nest cam, spread her wings and took flight for the very first time yesterday morning at precisely 10:46 AM, and returned for a visit at lunchtime today.
The moment marked a milestone not just for Sunny, but for the thousands of people across the nation who have been following the lives of these young eagles like hawks.
Sunny’s first flight came as a surprise to her sister Gizmo, who seemed a bit startled by the big moment. But Sunny returned to eat some fish and perhaps to encourage Gizmo to gove it a try.
NBC Palm Springs' Thalia Hayden spoke with Sandy Steers, an eagle expert and advocate from Friends of Big Bear Valley, who shed light on what we might expect next:
“Gizmo is four days younger and still seems content enjoying nest life and meals from mom and dad. But she’s been very observant today—practicing her wing flaps and keeping a close eye on Sunny's travels.”
According to Steers, the eaglets—like people—have individual personalities and emotional responses.
“They each go through these milestones differently. We’ve seen parents like Jackie and Shadow exhibit grief, joy, and resilience. It’s moving to watch—and a reminder that these birds are more than just wildlife. They are emotional, sentient beings.”
What’s next for Gizmo? Only time will tell, but with her sister leading the way, it may not be long before she too takes to the skies.
Steers also emphasized the growing number of viewers and supporters who are engaging with the eagles.
“It’s heartening to see how many people are connecting with nature through Sunny and Gizmo. If you’d like to help, consider donating to support eagle conservation at friendsofbigbearvalley.org. Every contribution makes a difference.”
