Trump Administration Pushes Ban on Transgender Athletes in California Girls' Sports
The Trump administration is calling on California public schools to prohibit transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports. The U.S. Department of Justice argues that such participation violates the 14th Amendment, which prohibits discrimination based on sex.
Currently, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) allows student athletes to compete according to their gender identity—a policy the DOJ now challenges. The move comes after a transgender high school junior won a state title in girls’ track and field last weekend, drawing national attention.
Federal officials have issued a deadline, giving school districts until Monday to confirm in writing that they will comply with the proposed ban. The DOJ has warned that legal action will be taken against districts that do not follow the directive.
The CIF has not publicly responded to the DOJ’s announcement. Meanwhile, civil rights advocates are expected to contest the administration’s interpretation of the Constitution, particularly how it applies to transgender students under existing anti-discrimination laws.
