Assemblymember Jeff Gonzalez Pushes for Audit of Coachella Valley Unified School District Amid $60M Deficit
Assemblymember Jeff Gonzalez has secured approval from the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to consider launching a full-scale audit of the Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD), which is facing a staggering $60 million budget shortfall.
Community members have voiced strong concerns over years of alleged financial mismanagement. While district officials point to the expiration of federal COVID-19 relief funds, a 2023 audit had already flagged troubling financial issues going back to 2019.
More than 300 staff positions have been eliminated, raising fears about impacts on classroom instruction, student services, and overall educational outcomes.
Gonzalez didn’t mince words, calling the situation a "leadership failure" and saying that a financial audit is essential for restoring public confidence in the district. “Our community deserves transparency and accountability—full stop,” he said. “An audit of the financials should not be controversial if there’s nothing to hide.”
A hearing is scheduled for June 18 to determine the scope of the potential audit.
