City of Indio Approves Major Redevelopment of Highway 111 Mall Site
The City of Indio has taken a bold step forward in its effort to rejuvenate local commerce by approving a major redevelopment project for the Indio Fashion Mall on Highway 111. Once a cornerstone of the community since its debut in 1975, the mall has been largely abandoned in recent years — a shell of the vibrant shopping destination many locals remember fondly.
On Wednesday, city officials and the Haagen Company, which owns the mall property, confirmed that a redevelopment agreement had been finalized. According to Bradbury, Vice President of Leasing for the Haagen Company, the location holds strategic value.
“We think we own the best piece of dirt in the city,” Bradbury said. “It’s right at Midtown at Monroe and 111, and so we’re really excited about the future.”
The company already owns land near the Indio Polo Grounds and is confident in the city’s growth potential. With a population of around 185,000, Indio surpasses nearby cities like Coachella, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs, offering untapped opportunities for development.
Locals, while enthusiastic about the project, expressed a desire for the new mall to reflect the community's changing tastes. “They should have more shops geared toward young adults,” one resident said, emphasizing a fresh approach over traditional mall formats that have struggled elsewhere.
Bradbury stated that delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had slowed previous redevelopment efforts. However, with the city’s renewed focus on building up its downtown core, the mall’s transformation could serve as a key component in the area’s revitalization.
“We expect shovels in the ground by the first of the year, if not sooner,” Bradbury shared. “And we hope to be turning over to the new tenants by summer of next year.”
With the city’s backing and growing anticipation among residents, the redevelopment of the Indio Fashion Mall could mark a significant turning point — not just for the property itself, but for the future of downtown Indio as a whole. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
