June 4: National Shopping Cart Day, Hug Your Cat Day, Cheese Day, and More
Wednesday, June 4, 2025, marks a full slate of lighthearted national holidays celebrated in our Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz segment, brought to you by Inland Empire Health Plan.
First up, it’s National Shopping Cart Day, honoring the invention of the modern shopping cart by Sylvan Goldman in 1937 at his Humpty Dumpty supermarket in Oklahoma City. While today’s grocery runs are more convenient than ever, the segment also poked fun at the enduring struggle of getting people to return their carts properly. “Celebrate today by putting your shopping cart back where it belongs,” one anchor joked.
It’s also National Hug Your Cat Day—not to be confused with the international version celebrated just days ago on May 30. It’s a purr-fect opportunity to show some love to your feline companions—or even visit a shelter and hug a future pet during peak kitten season.
International Cognac Day also lands on June 4, giving a nod to the French brandy named after the town of Cognac. Cheers to that!
Then there’s National Cheese Day, which sparked a lively discussion about favorite cheeses. From Wisconsin cheddar to fine brie on El Paseo, our anchors shared their cheesy preferences and even noted a new cheese shop that recently opened in Palm Desert.
The segment closed with a cheese-themed Pop Quiz. First question: What “cheesy” item contains no dairy and is made from the flesh of calves or pigs in a gelatin casing? Answer: Head cheese—a dish our anchors agreed to avoid.
Second quiz: In The Farmer in the Dell, what does the nurse take after the child? Answer: A cow—a moo-ving conclusion to today’s quiz.
Whatever your favorite, it’s a fun-filled day to celebrate some unique holidays.
