Trump Administration Doubles Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum to 50 Percent

Overnight, the Trump administration doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%, marking a major escalation in the former president’s ongoing push to revive American manufacturing.

This move builds on an earlier 25% tariff imposed in February and is seen as a critical issue for President Donald Trump’s political base. He previewed the increase during a speech to steelworkers in Pennsylvania, promising the higher rate would further protect the U.S. steel industry.

“We're going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States,” Trump said. “Nobody's going to get around that.”

The Steel Manufacturers Association issued a statement supporting the increase, calling it a necessary step to protect an industry long affected by global overcapacity—particularly from China.

However, other sectors are raising concerns. Manufacturers that rely on steel and aluminum, including carmakers, appliance companies, and construction firms, say the higher duties will likely translate into increased costs for consumers.

This tariff hike is part of broader trade talks. The Trump administration has been negotiating with several countries and urging them to present their best offers for new trade agreements. A 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs is set to expire on July 9.
