Trump Signs Proclamation Banning Travel From Dozen Countries, Citing Security Threats
President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation restricting travel from nearly 20 countries, citing national security threats.
The ban will fully block entry for nationals from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar (Burma), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
Seven other countries will face partial travel restrictions: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
According to two sources familiar with the decision, the president signed the proclamation Tuesday evening. It includes exceptions for lawful permanent residents, individuals with current visas, certain visa categories, and anyone whose entry is determined to serve U.S. national interests.
While officials say the proclamation had been under consideration for some time, a White House source confirmed the final decision was influenced by Sunday’s antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado.
The administration says the restrictions are designed to strengthen national security, though the move is expected to prompt legal and political challenges.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
