In 2024, it seems that our smartphones are becoming more integral to daily life than ever before. According to a new report from Reviews.org, the average American now checks their phone a staggering 205 times a day—marking a 42% increase compared to last year. This sharp rise in phone engagement reflects our increasing dependence on technology in every aspect of our lives. The study, which surveyed 1,000 Americans aged 18 and older, reveals that Americans are spending more time on their phones than ever before. On average, individuals now spend 5 hours and 1 minute per day on their phones, further underscoring the device's central role in modern life. In fact, 81% of people check their phones within the first 10 minutes of waking up, signaling how quickly we jump into our digital lives as soon as the day begins. Among the various age groups, Gen Z is leading the way in phone addiction, with 55.8% of this generation admitting to excessive phone use, according to Reviews.org. Following closely behind are Millennials, 54.6% of whom are also battling phone addiction. Interestingly, Millennials are the quickest to check notifications, with 89.5% of them doing so within 10 minutes of receiving an alert. Despite the surge in screen time, Reviews.org notes that Americans are becoming slightly more mindful of their phone usage during meals. This year, people are 42% less likely to use their phones during meals compared to last year, showing a shift towards more intentional disconnection during dining experiences. While phone engagement continues to rise, Reviews.org also points out a significant decline in phone upgrades in 2024, with a 35% drop in upgrades compared to 2023. This could indicate that consumers are holding onto their devices longer or that the advancements in new phones have become less compelling for many. The findings from Reviews.org offer a snapshot of our evolving relationship with technology. While our phone usage continues to skyrocket, it’s clear that smartphones are more than just communication tools—they’ve become deeply embedded in our daily routines, impacting everything from our sleep patterns to how we spend our leisure time.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
