Indio High School Celebrates Beloved Principal Derrick Lawson as He Retires After 40 Years in Education
A wave of cheers, tears, and touching tributes filled the halls of Indio High School today as faculty, students, and alumni gathered to celebrate the retirement of Principal Derrick Lawson. After 40 years in education—and nearly a decade as principal—Lawson is stepping down, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, warmth, and unwavering positivity. The retirement celebration, which wrapped up earlier this afternoon, drew a large crowd of current students, staff members, and past graduates, all eager to express their appreciation for a man they describe as more than just a school leader.
“Determined. Positive. Joyful,” said one student, summarizing the traits that have made Mr. Lawson a beloved figure on campus. Others echoed similar sentiments, sharing personal memories of how his guidance and encouragement shaped their high school experiences.
“This school was his home, and he wanted to share it with everyone,” said Megan Nolasco, a faculty member and former Indio High School student. “He was deeply connected to this place.”
Mr. Lawson began his final day early—arriving more than an hour before anyone else—to quietly walk the campus and reflect on his decades of service. “It’s joyful, but at the same time, emotional,” he said.
Throughout the day, students presented him with signs, projects, and heartfelt messages, and even signed a yearbook he left outside his office—a personal memento filled with memories and well wishes.
More than just an administrator, Lawson served as a mentor and role model. “He believed in us,” one student said. “He helped us realize our potential.”
Lawson’s farewell marks the end of an era at Indio High School, but his influence will continue to resonate through the lives he’s touched. As he steps into retirement, he hopes his students remember one thing: “I want them to say, ‘My principal believed in me. He helped me see the promise I had for the future—and helped me unleash it.’”
