Naples PrideFest Sparks Celebration, Protest, and Debate
Thousands filled Cambier Park to celebrate Naples PrideFest, waving flags and cheering under the afternoon sun. For many, it was a moment of pure joy and belonging. "I'm just happy to be here," one festivalgoer shared with a smile. Longtime allies like Cynthia Marino-Clark were also present, standing proudly with the LGBTQ+ community. But not everyone felt the same. Protestors gathered around the park, voicing strong concerns about children witnessing the festivities. Pastor Ariel Martinez from Cape Coral argued that kids shouldn’t be exposed to what he called "abnormal" displays. Others like Jacqueline Roque-De-Escobar worried about the emotional impact on children. As tensions rose, security remained a top priority. A drag show was relocated indoors at the Norris Center following a federal court decision limiting such performances to adults. Police intervened when arguments escalated, and at least one man was escorted away in handcuffs. Despite the disruptions, attendees praised officers for keeping the peace. Even one protestor admitted, "This has been a peaceful event."
