Carlos Alcaraz Wins Epic French Open Final; Local Star Kenny Schechter Goes Pro After Perfect Season
NBC Palm Springs Sports Desk, brought to you by Agua Caliente Casinos—we have your game.
It was a weekend of thrilling sports action, starting with an unforgettable showdown on the clay courts of Paris.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner delivered the match tennis fans had been craving. After a year of buildup and the missed rematch at Indian Wells due to Sinner’s suspension, the two rising stars met again—this time in the French Open final at Roland Garros.
Sinner came out swinging, racing to a two-set lead and even holding three championship points in the fourth set. But Alcaraz, never one to back down, clawed his way back, forcing a fifth set after a nail-biting tiebreak. Over five grueling hours later, Alcaraz emerged victorious in a final for the ages, capturing his fifth Grand Slam title.
Back here at home, one of Coachella Valley’s own is making headlines on the baseball diamond.
Kenny Schechter, a College of the Desert and Palm Springs Power alum, just capped off a perfect 59-0 season with LSU Shreveport, earning the win in the NAIA College World Series. Now, the former Roadrunner is going pro.
Schechter shared how his journey started in the desert and led to national success:
“College of the Desert helped prepare me for this level of competition. Without it, I wouldn't be where I am today.”
As if winning a national championship weren’t enough, Schechter was also signed to pitch professionally for the Gateway Grizzlies. And in a fairytale finish, he proposed to his fiancée Liz this past Friday.
Congratulations to Kenny on his engagement and incredible career milestone—we can’t wait to see what’s next.
That’s a wrap for sports. I’m Caitlyn Kelley.
