Local Breast Cancer Survivor Shares Her Story During National Cancer Survivor Month

June marks National Cancer Survivor Month, and one Coachella Valley woman is sharing her powerful story of detection, treatment, and hope.

Allegra Warfield was out walking her dog, Rafferty, when a sudden fall led her down an unexpected path. “I tripped and fell and swore I broke a rib,” she recalled. But when she visited her general practitioner, the X-ray revealed something else—an unusual spot in her breast.

That discovery led to a breast cancer diagnosis and life-saving treatment at Eisenhower Health’s Lucy Curci Cancer Center in Rancho Mirage.

“When I first found out I had cancer, it’s the scariest call anyone can get,” Allegra said. “The first thought was, ‘I’m going to die.’”

Dr. Tom Schulz, medical director of the cancer center, understands that fear. Inspired by his own mother’s experience with cancer, he brings compassion and perspective to his work.

“People said my mom lost her battle with cancer,” Schulz said. “But she didn’t lose. She won a lot. She inspired people—and that’s what matters.”

Thanks to advancements in treatment and early detection, Allegra is now cancer-free. She continues to walk Rafferty each day and encourages others to be proactive about their health.

“Having a positive outlook and attitude can change everything,” she said. “And it did for me.”

Dr. Schulz urges everyone to stay on top of regular screenings and to recognize that survival begins the moment of diagnosis.
