Major Development Planned Near Coachella Festival Grounds in Indio

The landscape around the world-famous Coachella Festival grounds may soon look very different. The owner of the Empire Polo Club has announced plans to transform roughly 218 acres near the venue into a dynamic mixed-use development, signaling a new chapter for the city of Indio and the greater Coachella Valley.

According to early outlines of the project, the development would include residential units, restaurants, retail spaces, and possibly even a sports venue — creating a vibrant new hub for entertainment, commerce, and community life.

County officials have already approved a key land use change that clears the way for the development to move forward. While specific design plans and timelines have yet to be released, the approval marks a major step in turning the ambitious vision into reality.

Local leaders are optimistic about what the project could bring to the eastern portion of the Coachella Valley.

“This has the potential to generate new jobs, attract visitors year-round, and provide much-needed housing and amenities to the area,” said one county official.

The development would sit near the Empire Polo Club, home to major music festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach, which already draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Supporters say the project could help diversify the region’s economy beyond tourism by creating a more sustainable and self-contained community.

If the project continues to progress, it could dramatically reshape Indio’s identity — from a seasonal destination to a year-round center for living, working, and recreation.
