Palm Springs Unified School District Names Dr. Marcus Funchess as New Superintendent
The Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) Board of Education has unanimously selected Dr. Marcus Funchess as the district’s next superintendent. The decision came during a closed session meeting on Tuesday evening. A formal vote to approve his employment contract is scheduled for the Board’s June 24 meeting, with Dr. Funchess set to officially begin his new role on July 1, following the retirement of current Superintendent Dr. Tony Signoret on June 30.
Dr. Funchess currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the San Bernardino City Unified School District. He brings more than two decades of experience in education, including roles as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of human resources—all within the same district.
“I am incredibly honored to serve as the next Superintendent of the Palm Springs Unified School District,” said Dr. Funchess in a statement. “It is a true privilege to join a forward-thinking district that proudly celebrates diversity and champions innovation. I’m excited to work alongside a passionate team of educators, staff, families, and community members who are united in their commitment to creating inclusive, engaging, and high-impact learning environments—where every student feels seen, supported, and inspired to thrive.”
Known for his student-centered approach, Dr. Funchess refers to all students as “scholars” and emphasizes equity, trust, and community collaboration as core tenets of his leadership. His initial goals include elevating academic success, enhancing equity, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and maintaining operational excellence.
PSUSD Board President Sergio Espericueta praised the selection, saying, “After an extensive process which included input and feedback from parents, students and community members and vetting many strong candidates, Dr. Funchess rose to the top with the entire Board. Due to his stellar reputation and demonstration of integrity, strong focus on equity for all students and history of establishing and maintaining relationships among staff and community, the Board is confident that Dr. Funchess is the right person to lead us forward and advance student achievement.”
Dr. Funchess holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Redlands, a master’s degree in Cross-Cultural Teaching from National University, and a bachelor’s degree from California State University, San Bernardino.
In his statement, Dr. Funchess emphasized his dedication to fostering “safe, welcoming spaces for all scholars and staff” and committed to “keeping our community connected through open, honest and meaningful communication.”
Dr. Funchess’s appointment marks a new chapter for PSUSD as the district looks ahead to continued growth and innovation under his leadership.
