200 U.S. Marines Deployed to Protect Federal Property Amid Anti-ICE Protests in Los Angeles
In response to continuing anti-ICE protests in downtown Los Angeles, 200 active-duty U.S. Marines began their assignment today guarding federal property and personnel, including the high-profile Wilshire Building.
The Marines are part of a larger battalion of 700 troops mobilized Monday in what military officials describe as a precautionary measure to support the protection of federal infrastructure amid civil unrest. The decision comes after weeks of sustained demonstrations targeting federal immigration enforcement agencies.
According to military leadership, the deployment is aimed solely at safeguarding federal assets and ensuring the safety of personnel. Major General Thomas Kearney, who is overseeing the operation, stated that the Marines will not be involved in law enforcement duties or crowd management.
“This is about protecting government facilities and the people who work in them,” Kearney said. “Our Marines are trained professionals, and their role is defensive, not confrontational.”
To prepare for the assignment, the Marines underwent specialized training in non-violent engagement, de-escalation strategies, and operating in civilian-heavy environments—skills aimed at preventing the escalation of tensions during their deployment.
The mission represents a transfer of responsibilities from National Guard units who had been posted at the Wilshire Building for the past two weeks. Officials say the transition will be seamless and that military presence is intended to be both firm and restrained.
The protests, which have drawn hundreds daily, are part of a larger national movement challenging the practices and existence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Organizers of the demonstrations have vowed to continue their actions, despite the increased military presence.
As the city braces for continued public demonstrations, officials have urged calm and cooperation, reiterating that the military’s presence is temporary and focused solely on protection—not enforcement.
