Indio DUI Checkpoint Nets Arrest, Citations Issued

Indio Police conducted a DUI checkpoint Friday night as part of an ongoing effort to keep impaired drivers off the road.
The operation was set up near the intersection of Jackson Street and Dillon Avenue, a high-traffic area often used by commuters and weekend travelers.
The checkpoint ran from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m., during which officers screened dozens of drivers for signs of impairment or other violations.
By the end of the night, officers had issued six citations for various offenses.
Among those, one citation was for driving with a suspended license, which police say remains a common and serious violation.
Another driver was cited for not securing a child properly in a car seat, an issue law enforcement says can have deadly consequences in the event of a crash.
The most serious incident of the night involved a driver who attempted to flee the checkpoint.
After a brief pursuit, that person was taken into custody and now faces charges for evading law enforcement.
Police emphasized that the checkpoint wasn’t just about making arrests, but about preventing tragedies caused by impaired driving.
The operation was funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, which supports programs aimed at reducing roadway deaths.
Officials say these checkpoints have proven effective in deterring unsafe behavior and educating drivers about responsible choices.
Indio Police plan to continue similar operations throughout the summer, especially around holidays and major events.
