Palm Springs Volleyball League Builds Community and Sets Sights on National Tournament

On Thursday nights at DeMuth Park Community Center, volleyball players of all skill levels come together for one reason: community. What began as a simple social media post by Palm Springs resident Aaron Castillo has grown into a popular and inclusive indoor volleyball league.

“I used to play in my 20s and 30s,” said Castillo. “When I moved here two and a half years ago, I just wanted to play again. So I put out an invite on Facebook and Instagram, and 25 people showed up that first night.”

Since its launch in October 2024, Palm Springs Volleyball has grown to nearly 85 active participants. Some haven’t played in decades, others are trying the sport for the first time, and all are welcomed with open arms.

“It’s given me a chance to build community out here,” said one participant. “Everyone’s super friendly, and it’s great to have something like this in the desert.”

With momentum building, the group is now setting its sights on a bigger goal: forming a team to compete in the national volleyball tournament held annually at College of the Desert—right in their own backyard.

As the group continues to grow and prepare for competition, Castillo says he’s proud of the way the sport is uniting people across Palm Springs. “It’s more than volleyball—it’s connection, health, and fun all rolled into one.”
