Republican Senator Joins Push to Raise Federal Minimum Wage to $15
A new bipartisan effort is reigniting the national conversation around minimum wage. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is joining Democratic Senator Peter Welch of Vermont in proposing legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
“The minimum wage hasn’t increased in 15 years,” said Hawley. “It’s time to give American workers a raise.”
The current federal minimum wage is $7.25, unchanged since 2009. If adjusted for inflation, that amount would be worth $10.81 in today’s economy, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Several states have already moved ahead with their own wage increases. Washington, D.C. leads with the highest minimum wage at $17.50 per hour, followed by Washington State at $16.66 and California at $16.50. However, many states still rely on the federal rate.
While inflation has cooled recently, Americans continue to feel the sting of high living costs. “Most people are not just looking at the numbers, they’re assessing their full financial picture,” said Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate.
Critics of the proposed increase warn of possible job losses. A previous Congressional Budget Office analysis suggested that a sharp wage hike could prompt some businesses to reduce hiring or cut hours due to rising labor expenses.
The proposal marks a rare moment of bipartisan cooperation on a contentious economic issue. The debate now moves to Congress, where lawmakers must weigh the potential benefits against the possible risks to employment and small businesses.
