Scorching Heatwave Hits Coachella Valley as Experts Urge Caution in Rising Temps
Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20th, but in the Coachella Valley, the season’s scorching heat has already arrived. Sunday marked the hottest day of the year so far, and today tied it, with temperatures hitting a blistering 117 degrees Fahrenheit and a UV index of 9. Though this heatwave hasn’t shattered any temperature records, local health experts are sounding the alarm. “When you stop sweating, feel dizzy, or get lightheaded — those are signs of heat exhaustion,” said a local health official. “If symptoms worsen, you should seek immediate medical care.”
Doctors warn that heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly, especially for older adults or individuals on medications that may interact poorly with high temperatures or direct sun exposure. The recommendation is clear: limit outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day — early morning or late evening — and stay well-hydrated. Dr. Natalie Nasser, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente in Riverside County, stressed the importance of skin protection even during seemingly mild times of day. “People think it’s safer at 5 p.m. or early morning, but if there’s sun, there’s UV risk,” she said. “Sunburns, and even burning your feet on hot pavement, are real hazards.”
To protect your skin, Dr. Nasser recommends applying sunscreen with SPF regularly — at least every two hours — and wearing wide-brimmed hats that shield your face, neck, and ears. Visors and baseball caps just don’t offer enough coverage, she noted. Both dermatologists and emergency physicians echoed the same prevention tips: stay in shaded or air-conditioned environments when possible, drink plenty of water, and always wear sunscreen. While skin cancer risks rise with repeated sun exposure, experts emphasize that with proper precautions, it's largely preventable. UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
