Scorching Start to the Week: Coachella Valley Hits 117°F in Hottest Day of the Year
COACHELLA VALLEY, CA — Happy Monday might be a stretch for those braving the Coachella Valley heat, where temperatures soared to a blistering 116°F — the hottest day of the year so far. The mercury climbed 13 degrees above the seasonal average of 103°F, coming dangerously close to the record-breaking number that just last week forecasters said we wouldn’t reach.
Turns out, we were just two degrees away.
It wasn’t just hot — it was dangerous. Several weather advisories were in effect across Southern California, including an Extreme Heat Warning for Southeast California and a Heat Advisory for the Inland Empire. Gusty winds only added to the problem, prompting an Air Quality Alert due to blowing dust and sand, making breathing conditions less than ideal, especially for those with respiratory issues.
With such intense weather, authorities issued critical reminders to the public:
Stay in the shade and seek air conditioning when possible.
Wear loose, light-colored clothing.
Avoid strenuous activities, especially during peak heat hours (roughly 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Stay hydrated — keep water with you at all times.
Check in on neighbors, especially the elderly or vulnerable.
And crucially, never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes.
Looking ahead, the forecast calls for continued above-average temperatures, but a slight cooling trend is expected as we approach Friday. While not exactly chilly, the relief will be welcome after a scorching start to the workweek.
