Bob Menendez Begins Prison Sentence for Corruption

Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez will start serving an 11-year federal prison sentence this Tuesday.
He is scheduled to report to a medium-security facility in Pennsylvania.
Last week, an appeals court denied Menendez’s latest attempt to remain free on bail while his appeal is pending.
The 71-year-old was convicted last year on 16 felony counts tied to a long-running corruption scheme.
Menendez made history as the first U.S. senator convicted of acting as an agent of a foreign government.
The charges stem from bribery involving cash, a Mercedes Benz, and gold bars.
These bribes were allegedly in exchange for political favors for three businessmen and the Egyptian government.
At the time, Menendez was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
His conviction shook Washington and raised questions about political corruption at the highest levels.
The lengthy sentence marks a significant fall for the longtime senator.
Supporters have maintained his innocence, while critics say justice has been served.
Menendez’s legal team continues to pursue appeals, but for now, he must begin his prison term.
