Trump Signals Possible Extension of TikTok Divestment Deadline
President Trump indicated today that he may extend the looming June 19 deadline for TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the popular video-sharing app. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump acknowledged the influence TikTok has had on younger voters and reiterated comments made in May that he would consider allowing more time.
The app, which boasts tens of millions of U.S. users—many of them teens and young adults—continues to be scrutinized by lawmakers and security officials concerned about its Chinese ownership. Critics have long warned that the Chinese government could gain access to American user data through ByteDance, raising significant privacy and national security concerns.
The deadline stems from legislation signed into law last year by then-President Joe Biden, which gave ByteDance until June 19, 2025, to either sell TikTok to a non-Chinese entity or face a nationwide ban in the United States.
Trump’s latest remarks suggest a more flexible approach, citing the app’s unexpected role in helping him connect with younger demographics during the 2024 election cycle. While no official extension has been announced, the administration appears to be weighing both political and security considerations in its decision.
