Coachella Stands Alone in Rejecting License Plate Cameras Over Privacy Concerns

While most cities in the Coachella Valley have embraced clock safety camera technology—touting its crime-solving capabilities—Coachella remains the lone holdout. City officials say their decision was grounded in concerns over civil liberties, government surveillance, and the potential misuse of residents’ data.

“We want to be able to control where our data goes, and it’s an unfunded mandate,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez. “This is the beginning of a violation of just your rights in general as a citizen. When you have government that knows your comings and goings, we didn’t feel that that was right.”

Flock Safety cameras have become a common tool for law enforcement, designed to capture license plates and aid in tracking criminal suspects. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who is also running for governor, strongly supports the technology.

“Every single crime involves a vehicle,” Bianco told NBC Palm Springs. “They either drive to the crime or they drive away. This is an amazing technological advancement for law enforcement.”

Bianco criticized Coachella’s decision, suggesting it creates a safe haven for criminals. “They’re truly protecting criminals that come into Coachella Valley. And if they go into the city of Coachella, they’re pretty much protected,” he said.

Despite pressure from law enforcement, Coachella’s stance has not wavered. Mayor Hernandez emphasized that the City Council views the matter as a slippery slope toward mass surveillance and government overreach.

Sheriff Bianco acknowledged that discussions about revisiting the decision are ongoing, but gave no timeline for any potential policy change. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
