DEA Marijuana Bust in East Valley Sparks Panic as 75 Undocumented Immigrants Arrested

What began as widespread fear of an immigration sweep turned out to be a massive drug operation—though it still left lasting impacts on the East Valley’s immigrant community.

The DEA’s Los Angeles field division confirmed that a large-scale operation carried out Wednesday in Indio, Coachella, Thermal, and Mecca was the result of a years-long investigation into illegal marijuana grow operations. According to the DEA, the coordinated raids spanned 787 acres and required a substantial show of force due to the size, layout, and topography of the grow sites.

As part of the bust, authorities arrested between 70 to 75 undocumented immigrants who were found working at the marijuana grow sites. Officials described the effort as a “high-risk operation,” requiring tactical support and armored vehicles.

But the highly visible military-style convoy sparked panic across the region, with many residents fearing the return of large-scale immigration raids. Social media lit up with reports of caravans and speculation about ICE sweeps—especially in the wake of similar enforcement actions recently reported in Los Angeles and other major cities.

Congressman Raul Ruiz, who visited NBC Palm Springs following the operation, voiced strong concern about the fear and trauma this kind of presence causes.

“What we heard today was a caravan of military vehicles throughout the East Valley,” Ruiz said. “What’s scary is that you see this caravan of militarized vehicles, and the community is in terror. They’re in trauma.”

Ruiz said his team was deployed on-site to monitor the situation alongside immigration rights organizations. He emphasized the emotional toll on farmworkers and families, many of whom were too afraid to leave their homes or go to work—even in the blistering 113-degree heat.

“This kind of action can have unintended consequences on innocent people just trying to survive,” Ruiz added.

The DEA has not yet released further details about the grow operations or the future legal process for those arrested.
