DHS Asks Lawmakers To Give Notice Before Ice Visits

The Department of Homeland Security wants members of congress to give 72 hours notice before a visit to an ICE detention centers. That's according to New Guidance. Currently under the annual appropriations act lawmakers have not been required to give notice of a visit to go into a DHS detention facility. Lawmakers are allowed to enter and inspect them as part of their oversight duties but now DHS is issuing a change in guidance. In addition to asking for 72 hours notice before any visits, the agency’s new memo seeks to differentiate ice field offices from detention facilities. The memo says a field office doesn't fall under the act provision. The changes come as democratic lawmakers have had run-ins with law enforcement after showing up at facilities amid the trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
