Juneteenth Celebrations Face Pushback Amid Rising Opposition to DEI Programs

Organizers and civil rights advocates across the U.S. are raising alarms that growing resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives is threatening the future of Juneteenth celebrations. The holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, has only recently been recognized as a federal holiday.

Communities from coast to coast are reporting increased difficulty hosting Juneteenth events, citing safety concerns and political backlash. Some cities have scaled back their festivities, while others have canceled them altogether due to the rollback of DEI programs and rising opposition to events that celebrate diversity.

In Milwaukee, a city known for one of the longest-running Juneteenth Day celebrations in the country, festivities continued this week. Organizers there emphasized the importance of commemorating freedom and history, especially in today’s political climate.

“Juneteenth shows us the way that we should celebrate — that we should celebrate freedom,” one community leader noted.

But not all areas are following suit. In West Virginia, Republican Governor Patrick Morrissey announced that state employees would not receive paid time off for the federal holiday, citing financial concerns. The ACLU of West Virginia responded sharply, saying Morrissey’s move showed “how little he understands or cares about racism.”

Robert Bland, assistant professor of history and Africana studies at the University of Tennessee, says the backlash is part of a long-standing cycle in American history. “We’re seeing a reversal of many gains made following the George Floyd protests,” Bland said.

While eliminating Juneteenth as a federal holiday would require congressional action, experts worry that reducing public celebrations risks eroding the holiday’s meaning and significance.

“Sometimes it’s two steps forward, three steps back,” one advocate said. “But we continue fighting — for rights, for justice, and for history not to be forgotten.”
