Federal Court Allows Trump to Maintain Control Over California National Guard Troops
A federal appeals court has ruled that President Trump can continue to exercise control over thousands of California National Guard troops. The decision from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reverses a lower court ruling that had required Trump to relinquish command of the guardsmen he federalized to assist with security during anti-immigration enforcement protests in Los Angeles.
The appeals court sided with the Trump administration, stating the former president likely acted within his lawful authority under federal law when he took control of the troops. The court's decision marks a legal win for Trump, who celebrated the ruling online, calling it a "big win."
The federalization of the National Guard was originally met with resistance from California leaders, who argued the move infringed on state authority. Critics also questioned the need for such a large-scale military presence during protests, which they said risked escalating tensions.
Despite the appeals court ruling, California still has a legal path forward. State officials may choose to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene on an emergency basis.
As the debate continues over the limits of federal versus state control, this ruling could set a precedent for future disputes involving National Guard deployments in politically sensitive situations.
