‘Jaws’ Turns 50: A Look Back at the Film That Defined the Summer Blockbuster
It was 50 years ago today that a movie terrified audiences and forever changed how we see the ocean. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws premiered in theaters in 1975, sparking a cultural phenomenon and cementing itself as the first true summer blockbuster.
The film’s legacy is being honored across the country, including at its iconic filming location on Martha’s Vineyard—known in the film as Amity Island. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is hosting a special “Amity Weekend” exhibit featuring original props, including the mayor’s blazer, one of the barrels used to “catch” the shark, and even a mold of Ben Gardner’s head, portrayed by island local Craig Kingsbury. Kingsbury not only appeared in the film but also inspired much of Robert Shaw’s portrayal of the shark-hunting fisherman Quint.
Spielberg, just 27 years old at the time, faced major production challenges. From budget overruns to the now-infamous mechanical shark named “Bruce” constantly breaking down, the shoot was anything but smooth. The cast and crew endured grueling days on open water, and many of those frustrations have since become part of Hollywood legend.
That behind-the-scenes drama became the focus of The Shark is Broken, a stage play that recently appeared in the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs’ own Revolution Stage Company brought the story to life in April. The creative team, led by set designer Joanne Tracy, ingeniously recreated Quint’s boat, the Orca, using everything from flower pots to sprinkler heads—turning Dollar Tree finds into theatrical magic.
As Steve Sumrall of NBC Palm Springs put it, Jaws didn’t just change movies—it redefined what summer blockbusters could be. And today, it still holds a place in pop culture’s deepest waters.
With tributes spanning from New England to the desert, one thing is clear: we’re going to need a bigger boat to hold all the memories.
