AI and Creativity Expo Debuts in Palm Springs, Showcasing the Future of Innovation
Palm Springs took a bold step into the future this week as it hosted its first-ever AI and Creativity Expo at the city's Convention Center. The event brought together industry leaders, creators, and curious minds to explore how artificial intelligence is shaping the way we live, work, and connect.
Baratunde Thurston, a keynote speaker, author, and new Palm Springs resident. Known for his work at the intersection of tech, culture, and storytelling, Thurston emphasized the Coachella Valley’s unique blend of natural beauty, creativity, and community. "We don’t have to lose our roots to embrace what’s coming. There's something very special about this place—its nature, arts, and people—and AI can help amplify those connections."
The expo featured a range of exhibits, from AI-powered photo booths that let users reimagine their environments, to interactive voice assistants capable of holding meaningful conversations. But beyond the flash of technology, the focus remained on practical applications. Attendees were especially eager to learn how AI can enhance their work—from automating marketing tasks to enabling more efficient content creation and outreach.
"AI helps streamline processes and gives me more time to engage with media and clients," said one attendee. "It’s about figuring out how to work with it, not against it."
Educators also see opportunity. Mark Meyer, a trustee at College of the Desert, noted that while the technology is still new, educators are beginning to recognize AI as a valuable classroom tool. "It’s not about replacing human interaction," Meyer said. "It’s about teaching students how to use AI thoughtfully—because it’s going to be a part of their lives, like it or not."
Despite enthusiasm, concerns about the misuse and ethical implications of AI linger. Thurston acknowledged these hesitations but remains hopeful. "The most positive road we can take with AI is using it to better understand each other—across language, across class, and across backgrounds," he said. "These tools can help us make sense of the information chaos and foster empathy in new ways."
As AI continues to weave itself into daily life, the message from the Palm Springs AI and Creativity Expo was clear: The future is not just about machines—but how we use them to benefit our lives. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
