El Paseo Under Construction: Palm Desert Launches Summer Makeover of Iconic Shopping District
Palm Desert’s premier shopping and dining destination, El Paseo, is getting a summer facelift—and while construction may bring some dust and delays, the city and store owners want you to know: they’re still open for business.
NBC Palm Springs’ newest contributor, Ryland Penta, who also serves as Community Relations Supervisor for the City of Palm Desert, shared more about the project now underway. The refresh includes a full repaving of the nearly 20-year-old roadway, bringing it up to modern standards with durable asphalt and improved infrastructure.
The project is divided into six phases, stretching from Highway 74 to Highway 111, in an effort to minimize disruption. Sidewalks and two-way traffic remain open, though street parking may be limited near active construction zones. Ample parking remains available behind the shops.
As part of the upgrade, the city is adding three new raised mid-block pedestrian crossings. These safety enhancements are designed to calm traffic and encourage movement across both sides of the street—something store owners say will improve access and visibility.
“Having two more crossings on this end is going to really increase that traffic flow,” said Chrissy Armstrong, a longtime El Paseo shop owner. “It’s one of the most exciting aspects.”
During construction, outdoor dining decks have been temporarily removed, but restaurants will have the option to reinstall them when work is complete.
Despite the temporary inconveniences, many business owners and shoppers remain optimistic. Amy Smith, who manages shops along El Paseo, says the project symbolizes a positive investment in the district’s future.
“There’s noise, dust, and inconvenience,” Smith said, “but we’re keeping our eye on the prize—a beautiful new street when it’s all done.”
Construction is expected to wrap up in September. In the meantime, Palm Desert officials encourage residents and visitors alike to continue supporting their favorite El Paseo shops and restaurants.
