Major Summer Construction Projects in Full Swing Across the Valley

Let’s dive into where delays are expected and which routes you’ll want to avoid. As always, we're joined by CV Sync Program Manager Kris Gunterson, live from the Traffic Management Center in Palm Desert, to break down what drivers need to know before hitting the road this week.

🚧 Cathedral City: East Palm Canyon Road Widening

We’re kicking things off in Cathedral City, where work is well underway near the Cathedral Cove Shopping Center. Crews are currently widening the eastbound lanes of East Palm Canyon Drive, and traffic is reduced to one lane in the area with lower speed limits posted.

🔧 This project includes updating multiple traffic signals and will ultimately improve access to the shopping center.

🗓️ Expect this one to last a few months.
🚗 Alternate route: Ramon Road is your best bet to avoid delays.

🛠️ La Quinta: Major Pavement Rehab Project Begins

This is shaping up to be the biggest and most disruptive project of the summer.

The Highway 111 pavement rehabilitation in La Quinta spans from Plaza La Quinta (west) all the way to Jefferson Street (east). Only one lane of traffic in each direction will be open at any given time.

⏳ Crews are starting on the west side and working east, with noticeable traffic impacts expected by mid-July.

🚦 Traffic engineers will extend green lights on Fred Waring Drive to accommodate increased flow.
🖥️ There’s also an information page with weekly alerts—similar to what was done for Palm Springs' rehab work—so residents and commuters can stay in the loop.

📅 This project is expected to last through November, wrapping up just in time for Thanksgiving.

🚧 Indian Wells: Turn Lane Improvements Starting in August

Originally slated for July, improvements near Washington Street and Miles Avenue in Indian Wells are now scheduled to begin August 4.

🚌 Work includes:

  • Extending the right turn lane near the bus pad on the north side.

  • Widening the curb radius near Miles to improve truck and bus movement.

🔧 While not expected to be heavily disruptive, it may still cause minor slowdowns.

🚗 Alternate routes: Cook Street or Jefferson Street.

🗓️ Estimated completion: Mid-to-late September.

⚠️ Palm Desert: Storm Drain Repair on Fred Waring

This one came up quickly: A damaged storm drain on westbound Fred Waring Drive needs to be replaced. Work starts today and will reduce traffic to one lane:

  • This week: One lane starting around 8:30 AM

  • Next week: One lane starting at 7:00 AM

🛠️ Crews plan to wrap up by July 2, including paving.

🚗 To avoid delays: Use Avenue 42, or Highway 111 (for now, before La Quinta’s work begins).

That’s it for this week! Big thanks to Kris Gunterson for the updates and friendly reminders. Remember to slow down in work zones and put your phone away—your safety (and theirs) depends on it.

We’ll be back next week with more road updates so you can Know Before You Go.
