Major Summer Roadwork Hits Cathedral City, La Quinta, and Indian Wells: What Drivers Need to Know
It’s construction season in the Coachella Valley, and that means it’s time to Know Before You Go. We’re highlighting the week’s biggest road projects so drivers can plan ahead and avoid frustrating delays.
First up: Cathedral City, where crews are working on a road widening project in front of the Cathedral Cove Shopping Center on East Palm Canyon Drive. Eastbound traffic is reduced to a single lane, and the speed limit has been lowered. New traffic signal phases are also being installed. This project is expected to last for several months. Drivers are encouraged to use Ramon Road as an alternate route.
Next, a major project is getting underway in La Quinta—and it may be the most disruptive one of the summer. Crews will repave the main road corridor from Plaza La Quinta on the west end all the way to Jefferson Street. Only one lane will be open in each direction during the work, which will cause significant congestion. The project is expected to impact traffic starting in mid-July. Extra signal timing on Fred Waring Drive will help offset the traffic, but drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the area and plan alternate routes early.
Finally, in Indian Wells, a delayed project is now expected to begin August 4th. The intersection of Miles Avenue and Washington Street will be modified, including a new extended right-hand turn lane and a reshaped corner for smoother turns. This project is expected to wrap up by mid-to-late September. While not expected to be highly disruptive, Cook Street and Jefferson Street are suggested detours.
Stay safe and traffic-aware this summer—and remember, a little planning goes a long way.
