Most Americans Say $100K+ Needed for Comfort

How much would it take for you to feel financially secure? According to a new Bankrate survey, nearly half of Americans say the magic number is $100,000 or more a year. In fact, 25% of respondents said they’d need $150,000 or more to feel truly comfortable. But not everyone sets the bar so high. Another 45% say financial freedom could come with less than six figures. About 34% would feel secure earning at least $50,000 annually. Still, the majority of Americans—77%—say they don’t feel completely financially secure right now. And more than 1 in 3 believe they may never reach that point. The numbers paint a stark picture of financial uncertainty. Especially when you compare them to real income data. According to the latest census numbers, the median U.S. household income in 2023 was around $80,000. That means half of all American households are living on even less.
