Abortion Travel Surges Three Years After Roe Ruling

It’s been three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Now, new estimates show the ripple effects are still intensifying.
In 2024 alone, more than 150,000 Americans traveled to another state for abortion care.
That means over one in seven people who had an abortion crossed state lines to access the procedure.
That’s more than double the number from 2019.
Many of those patients came from states where abortion is now banned.
In fact, nearly half of all abortion travelers in 2024 were from just 12 states with total bans.
Texas saw the highest number—over 28,000 residents left the state to get an abortion.
The data comes from the Guttmacher Institute, a nonpartisan group that supports abortion rights.
Their research tracks reproductive health policy and outcomes nationwide.
Advocates say these numbers show how state bans disproportionately affect low-income and rural Americans.
And they warn the barriers to access could keep growing without federal protections.
