A new study from Bankrate is shedding light on the often-overlooked expenses of homeownership, revealing that hidden costs are now averaging just over $21,000 per year in 2025.
These hidden costs go beyond mortgage payments and include home insurance, property taxes, utilities, energy expenses, and maintenance or repair work.
According to the study, homeowners in states like Hawaii, California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Washington face the highest additional costs, often due to elevated property values and insurance premiums.
Meanwhile, states with the lowest hidden costs include West Virginia, Mississippi, Indiana, Missouri, and Arkansas, where home values and living expenses remain more affordable.
Experts say it’s important for potential homeowners to factor in these recurring expenses when budgeting for a new home.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike. Estevan Figueroa of King’s Club Barbershop is giving back across the Coachella Valley — one haircut at a time.
