LGBTQ Seniors Face Unique Aging Challenges, Advocates Call for Better Support
As Pride celebrations continue nationwide, advocates are turning the spotlight on a group often overlooked in the LGBTQ+ community: older adults.
There are over 3 million LGBTQ seniors in the U.S., a number expected to exceed 7 million by 2030, according to John-Paul Hayworth, Senior Director of LGBTQ Audience Strategy at AARP. These individuals face unique aging challenges that often go unaddressed in traditional elder care planning.
The AARP Dignity 2024 Survey revealed that the top concern among aging LGBTQ adults is social isolation. Many are single, childless, and lack the traditional family support networks that help others as they age. “Some of those social connections that we would assume from a family or biological connection aren’t there,” Hayworth explained.
Another major concern is health care. One-third of transgender and nonbinary older adults say their care has been compromised due to discrimination or lack of understanding from medical providers. “Anytime you find a new doctor, you have to come out again,” Hayworth said. “And it’s a challenge sometimes to find good healthcare professionals who understand the needs of the community.”
Ernesto Finales, Director of Care Management for SAGE USA, emphasized the importance of building trust and understanding. “Part of that is really connecting with the community and making sure that their voices are elevated,” he said.
Experts urge LGBTQ seniors to plan early for both caregiving and financial needs. Many older LGBTQ adults experienced discrimination in the workforce, which limited their ability to save for retirement.
SAGE and AARP continue to advocate for inclusive policies and better training for healthcare professionals. With Pride Month bringing visibility, supporters hope more attention will be given to ensuring dignity and quality of life for LGBTQ individuals as they age.
