U.S. Military Establishes New Southern Border Zones
The U.S. military is expected to announce two new military zones along the southern border this week, according to three U.S. officials. These zones are called National Defense Areas and serve as extensions of existing military installations. One zone will be attached to Joint Base San Antonio in Texas, covering roughly 250 miles along the Rio Grande River. The other will be connected to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona, stretching more than 100 miles along the border. These new zones will allow military troops to temporarily detain migrants before transferring them to law enforcement authorities. This move aims to enhance border security and streamline migrant processing. Earlier this spring, two other National Defense Areas were established at Fort Bliss in Texas and Fort Huachuca in Arizona. These expanded zones reflect the military’s growing role in supporting border operations. The military’s involvement is part of a broader effort to manage increased migration and cross-border challenges. Critics argue this could militarize the border further, raising human rights concerns. Supporters say it improves coordination between military and civilian agencies. The announcement is expected to come later this week. Officials say the new zones will complement existing border security measures and provide additional resources.
