American Airlines Flight Returns to Las Vegas After Engine Issue Shortly After Takeoff
An American Airlines flight en route from Las Vegas to Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced an engine issue shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning, necessitating a swift return to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). The flight, operating as AA1665 with an Airbus A321 aircraft, landed safely back at the airport around 8:20 AM PDT, with all 165 passengers and crew reported to be unharmed.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the flight crew reported an engine problem shortly after departing Harry Reid International. While American Airlines stated the aircraft taxied back to the gate under its own power and initial inspections found no evidence of fire in the engine, eyewitnesses on the ground offered a more dramatic account. Several reports from those near the airport described hearing loud "booming noises" and observing smoke, and even brief bursts of flames, emanating from the aircraft's engine as it maneuvered to return.
The immediate response from the flight crew ensured a safe landing, preventing any injuries among those on board. The aircraft has since been taken out of service for a thorough evaluation by maintenance teams.
The FAA has confirmed that it will be investigating the incident, emphasizing that details currently available are preliminary. Such investigations are standard procedure for any in-flight anomaly involving engine performance. The focus will be on determining the exact nature and cause of the mechanical issue to prevent future occurrences. Passengers on the affected flight were reportedly accommodated by American Airlines to continue their journeys to Charlotte.
